Honey Sharma: Psychological Counselor

2,105

While I was in school I always liked to observe different kinds of behaviors portrayed by people in different situations and that is why I always loved to be around people. I had no idea then that I would make a career out of it. Being a nonmedical student; physics, chemistry, and maths could never interest me and I would always wait for my English or psychology lectures. It was when the subject psychology happened to me only then did I realize that it was how my destiny was planned. Even in my physical education class I would always run to my psychology teacher and keep asking her numerous questions about humans and their behaviors and their reasons behind doing what they do. Thanks to my favorite teacher that she never got tired of my questions and always answered them patiently. It is because of her that psychology became my passion and my driving force. But it’s not always that easy and like they say that life is no a cakewalk. Where I was lucky that I had clear goals in my mind about what I wanted to do in life when more than half of my classmates were clueless; at the same time, it was hard to convince my parents that I wanted to pursue a career in psychology. As till today, psychology has a stigma attached to it and people do not find it a stable career. But after numerous attempts, they finally agreed and that was from where the most beautiful journey of my life started.

After completing my graduation and post-graduation in clinical psychology, I was doing my internship at lady Hardinge medical college and the experience I had there was what changed me as an individual and my outlook towards life. It helped me become a more positive person and to never take anything for granted, even the smallest of things. We often get scared of those fighting a battle with their mental issues where instead all they need is love and care. The sooner the mentality of the society changes the better this place will become for all those fighting a battle. It is not just about the adults, even the children who we call the future of our country are fighting their own battles which I realized when I started working for a school as a school counselor. Those little innocent beings had issues which are beyond our thinking capabilities and the situations saddened me. As being parents and teachers, we put so many expectations and so much pressure on our children that we forget to realize what their potential is. It is, therefore, our duty to ensure that before becoming a successful individual in any particular field they become good human beings with morals and values which is lacking in today’s generations. We need to develop empathy towards them for their proper growth and development. Currently, I am working as a psychological counselor with an air force station, Gurgaon and can happily say that I love my work as I choose to do what I loved. It gives me immense satisfaction when I can bring a smile on a crying face or if I can contribute even a tiny bit to the society. Because when we try and change, the world changes.
